Uneasy Europe

The most recent developments in Europe can-of fail to have an unfortunate effect in the yes of those who have supported Mr. Neville Chamberlain's endeavour to bring about a general appeasement. Thus while Great Britain, which has already signed a "no-war" agreement with Germany, is being subjected to propagand dist attacks by the German press, the improvement in Franco-Italian relationships marked by the despatch of a new ambassador to Rome is being marred by the inauguration "of a campaign aimed at the establishment of Italian claims to French territories. It will be noted that the allegations in the German Press that British soldiers have been guilty of outrages including rape in Palestine was the cause of a protest in the House of Commons, and have now been refuted by. Arab leaders themselves, according to a Reuter message. The scene in the Italian Chamber of Deputies has naturally used considerable anxiety in Paris, and while the Italian Government denies responsibility for it, the fact that it occurred at such a time cannot have anything but the most unfortunate repercussions. If these simultaneous occurrences are, as some people believe, brought about by a desire to weaken Anglo-French relations they are doomed to fail of their purpose. They can de nothing but strengthen the Entente. It is unbelievable that Great Britain would forsake nce if this latest demand is taken any further.

at is even; more serious is the apparent setback which Mr. Chamberlain has received, for, as conditións exist at present, it would be idle to believe that there has been any real betterment of conditions in Europe, and that chiefly because the Rome-Berlin axis is not yet contributing its share towards improvement. The Prime Minister's visit to Rome next month will consequently be watched with the keen.

interest. "That he is indeed a "go-gelter in the interests of peace witl be readily admitted, but it will-also be seen that he is being faced with fresh obstacles which will make the at-ment of his policy something of very considerable difficulty.
