French Sailor Assaults Policeman

Sequel to Fistic Battle With Foreign Civilian Shortly after 11 o'clock. Saturday evening, C.P.C. 1202, attached to Central Police station, was assaulted and seriously injured above the left eye, by a French sailor. The assault occurred on Avenue Edward VII in the vicinity of Rue Chu Pao-San. otherwise known as "Blocd Alley," Shanghai's well-known cabaret street.

It appears that when the constable saw the French sailor engaged in a fight with a foreign civilian, he approached the nearest street telephone to inform his station that a brawl was in progress, When the sailor saw this, he made one dash for the policeman and assaulted him, according to information available yesterday. d The injured C.P.C. was rushed to Central station where a bandage was applied to his wound and then was taken to the Police hospital.

The matter has been brought to the attention of the French authorities concerned, who are understood to be investigating the affair.
