Cross-Country Run

Beats Chinese Who Sets New Local Record

An interesting part of yesterday's cross-country run held by Chinese was the fact that it was won by a foreigner who merely went along for jthe exercise. Pte. Clements, had heard of the 5-mile race being held by seven Chinese clubs and decided tə use it as a training run. To the Eeneral surprise he romped home about 400 yards ahead of the leading Chinese runner, T. Z. Chen of the Hongkew Cross Country Club On top of that, third and fourth places Were occupied by Drummer Boy Hudson of the East Surreys and J. J. Walsh whó, like the winner, had gone along for a practice run.

The speed of the winning soldier is indicated by the fact that T. Z. Chen broke the local record, covering the 5-mile course in 29 minutes and 44 seconds. The run was won by. the Hongkew Cross-Country Club "A" vith the San Kao Club second. The first five Chinese were T. Z. Chen, C. K. Wong, J. S. Ching, J. F. Chang and S. H. Chen.
