The Joint Committee of Shanghai women's Organizations held their monthly meeting at 359 Rue Cardinal Mercier, where they enjoyed the hospitality of the Russian Women's League.
Mrs. J. S. Whitney gave a brief account of the Lord Mayor's Fund, and of her connection with it when home on leave. The appeal was launched under the auspices of the China Association, the British Red Cross and a confederation of missionary societies. It was signed by ihe heads of all churches in the British Isles, the Lord Mayor and many others. The Lord Mayor allowed the fund to be opened in his name, a noteworthy departure from precedent for hitherto his funds have always been for the relief of suffering after natural catastrophes. These funds usually remain open for two to three months, but this one continued under his aegis for nine months. ' Then it changed its name to the British Fund for Relief in China and still continues to receive much money.
Through the Victoria League, Mrs. Whitney addressed many groups of women representing their churches in all parts of England, and found Zreat interest everywhere in the situation in China.
Every year the Joint Committee sponsors a Christmas Tree, which stands in front of the Y.W.C.A., 999 Bubbling Well Road. The Committee offer their thanks to the Public Works Department of the Shanghai Municipal Council, to the Power Company and to the China General Edison Company for the help these bodies so kindly gave.
