The absorption of these radiations by ozone results in an elevation of temperature. Part of the energy is transferred by molecular collisions to the other atmospheric gases, while part of it is re-radiated by the ozone molecules, The relative importance of these two kinds of heat dissipation of the radiation absorbed by ozone depends in part upon the atmospheric pressure and hence upon the height of the ozone level. It will be evident at once that the interplay of these effects influences the temperature of the earth's surface and of its upper atmosphere. The ozone layer acts somewhat like the glass windows of a greenhouse which keep in the long-wave radiations and build up higher temperatures in the interior.
The experimental results have shown that the absorbing ozone layers are so high that observations from either manned or unmanned stratosphere balloons are of little help at present. But the technique of stratosphere exploration is rapidly advancing and the astronomer may some day be able to send his instruments above the ozone layer and solve the mysteries of the ultra-violet radiation, from: Spe celestial bodies.
