Boat Traffic

Cargobua: s Demanded to Pay "Security" Tax Cargo boats plying on the Soochow Creek are experiencing difficulties over the problem of taxes, according to information from reliable sources.

The tax is being demanded by the so-called "Inland Waters Cargoboats Association", reported to be under the administration of the Pootung regime.

Cargo boats coming to the Settlement area from inland via the Soochow Creek are demanded to pay a "security" tax to the organ. Failure to meet with the demand, it is reported, is often countered with the threat of refusal of permission to ply on the creek.

Boats near the Kiangse Road Bridge have already suffered through this restriction, and four boats detained at the Toyoda Cotton Mill jetty were required to pay a membership fee to the Association.

The interference with the boat traffic has aroused keen attention, as the detention of any large number of cargo-boats, it is considered, not only will affect the livelihood of several thousand boatmen, but will hinder the transportation of supplies into the Settlement.
