Old Bullet Provides Echo of 1937 War

Shanghai, Oct. 2. The fact that loose—and dangerous—ammunition is still lying about in the 1937 fight ing area north of the Soochow Creek was demonstrated at 9.20 o'clock yesterday morning when a Chinese, while rummaging in the vicinity of the Wuchow Road Market (Kashing Road Police District), picked up an old rifle cartridge and started to take it apart. The missile exploded in his hand, puncture ing the flesh. The man was picked up by the crew of a Fire Brigade ambulance and taken to the Shanghai Sanitar~ jum and Clinic in Range Road. His condition is not serious.

Fighting was unusually fierce in the neighbourhood of the Wuchow Road Market and P.W.D. Depot in August, 1937. Besides, several hundred Chinese refugees were massacred in the market itself and their bodies burnt there, during the first few days of the hostilities.
