London, Oct. 13.
Although the Russian action is of course. indefensible, writes Reuter's Diplomatic Correspo t, Germany is the more to blame for what is happening in the Baltic States and Finland. Germany, he says, led these eouniries to look to her as the chief protection against Communism. She has now left them entirely at the mercy of Russia, thereby providing further proof of her treachery towards those with whom she professes friendship and of the hollowness of her preterition that she controls the Baltics.
The Soviet bases in the Baltic States and Finland will be more a threat to Germany than to anyone else. Clearly, it was necessity rather than choice that made Germany thus abandon the Eastern Baltic to Russia.
As regards the evacuation of Germans and the German Belts from the Baltic States, only a small proportion of these people are Nazi by conviction. Faced with the choice of Bolshevism or return to the Reich, they prefer the latter alternative, being racially German. The return of the Balts, Reuter's Diplomatic Cor-Tespondent continues, is yet another sign of German weakness and treachery.
Germany has in the past always claimed {he Baltic States as within her sphere of cultural influence. She is now cynically abandoning them to Russia and is meting out to the considerable German minorities there the same treatment she accorded the Tyrolese.—Reuter.
