Mr. Weldon James, former United Press correspondent in China now covering the Spanish civil war, today narrowly escaped death near Jerica when Nationalist planes bombed tne highway on which his car was approaching the ruined ci!
Mr. James, a survivor of last December's Panay bombing near Nanking, was forced to abandon automobile and flee into a field with his chauffeur, There they found a cave in which they remained sheltered until the Nationalist planes disappeared. Their car was not damaged.
Later Mr. James reached Jerica which he found a shambles. Nationalist troops were pressing in on the city from three sides and the heavy artillery bombardment laid down on the city late in the day forced Mr. James to return behind the Republican lines for safety.
Mr. James was stationed in Shanghai, Narking and Canton for the United Press at various times during the first year of the current Sino-Japanese hostilities. He later served for a short time with the United Press in Manila before proceeding to Europe where he was assigned to the Spanish war.—United Press.
