Opinion among financial quarters here is divided regarding the significance of Dr. Hjalmar Schacht's removal from the post of President of the Reichsbank.
On the one hand, the belief is Berlin, Jan. 21.
An important new decree has been drawn up by Herr Hitler. The decree, it is understood, greatly expedites Germany's military preparedness. All men, after the completion of their military service, will be organized into defence detachments, and incorporated into the National Socialist Storm Corps.—Reuter. expressed that the German Government is aware of its dependence upon Dr. Schacht's financial ability, and the fact that he has retained a Ministry is interpreted as indicative that the Government has no intention of pansing with his services.
On the other hand, however, there is a strong feeling here regarding the probability of some new policies being launched in the near future, and it is pointed out that, in view of the trend of German foreign trade, some drastic action is inevitable.
Dr. Schacht's removal is not expected here to have any immediate effect on standstill credits, although a less sympathetic attitude ray possibly be expected when the present agreement comes up for renewal Reuter. who stated that all expenditure should be covered by Budget: receipts. He had opposed short or long-term loans because of the German Treasury's actual situation. Instead, he advocated heavily increased taxation. A reversal of this policy is now expected, although it was rumoured today that "voluntary" contributions in the form of percentages of fortunes, would also be decided.
