It has been a very real pleasure for my fellow Trustees and myself to administer this fund. In mentioning my fellow trustees I not only mean Sir Robert Calder Marshall and Dr. Gauntlett, who are with us today, but also Mr. W. S. King who was a trustee at the time of the inception of fund. It represents a definite step to-words the ideal of a proper school building and adequate grounds. But it is of course a very small step. This is not the occasion to formulate any plans for the completion of the scheme. But a time will surely come and let us trust it is not too distant, when we may expect to again have special cause for thankfulness and when that time arrives what more fitting monument could be erected by the British community than a well equipped school and grounds for British boys?
As a national community we in Shanghai have not, I venture to say, a record to be proud of in so far as looking after the education of our children on British lines is concerned. There are several nationalities, which you can all easily call to mind, who have done far more than we have in dollar at its then value but unfortunately whilst the campaign was still în progress the hostilities between China and Japan broke out and all collections were brought to an abrupt halt. The fund was eventually closed at $114,051.94, Galling Experience For the success achieved in reaching his figure, we have largely to thank Mr. Seddon and Mr. Liddell and it is rideed unfortunate that neither of these two good friends of the School is able to be present today. The pity Opens TO-DAY
