Of Disappointments; Has Won $20,000
New York, Oct. 30.
Charles Howerd's Argentine ambler, Sorteado, spur to a mew North American record for a mile and a half inthe recent Manhattan handicap, the big charger with the leather lungs completed one of the weirdest cycles in turf history.
It all began two years ago when Howard and his trainer, Silent Tom Smith, first realized Seabiscuit's ginipy knee would hold up for only a limited number of races. There were no capable replacements in the Howard sitting, and owners of other ranking stables appeared reluctant to dispose of any of their fancier holdings, So the Howards went south, to Argentina. Lin Howard, eldest of the three Howard sons, had toured the on a polo trip; so he knew the country. Also he had col-elaborated with Bing Crosby in a i; so he knew South American friends scouted the horse of Buenos Aires for months, When they found two horses. The first was Kayak 11, an unschooled yearling for which they paid $7,590. The second coming along. Then he ran third in a mile event at Hollywood Park, and finally was sent into the $15,000 Aloha Handicap of a mile and a half at the same track on July 26. He opposed T. B. Martins Cravat, considered unbeatable at the distance. Sorteado won by three and a half lengths and broke the track mark of 2:32 by three full seconds.
Despite this excellent showing, the sceptics said his feather of 109 pounds against 120 for Cravat had accounted for his victory. Shipped East he ran third in the mile and a quarter Narragansett Special, and second a shor-for race. Then he was brought to New York and started in the Man-hatton.
In this race he proved definitely that he had arrived. To date he has won back. $20000 of his purchase Price, but in view of his Manhattan mark of 2: 288 and the fact that he is barely four years old, there should be thousands more he can take for the mere running. In the Manhattan he beat Cravat again, with the break in weight being only eight pounds. In the same race he also whipped every good distance runner in the country. With luck, he will go on whipping them again and again. United Press.
