Many hundreds of the wooden blocks which form the pavement in Nanking Road were turned up yesterday when the Public Works Department started extensive repair operations along the north side of Shanghai's main thoroughfare. Seores'of coolies were put to work pulling up the blocks between the north footpath and the eastbound tram track.
The sign saying, "Closed to Traffic" and in Chinese "Lu Pu Tung Hsing" was effective along the affected stretch of road.
