The Shanghai title has been won three consecutive years by the same player more than once. M. B. Ramsay was the winner from 1901 to 1903. Next to do the "hat trick" was H. Toussaint, from 1912 to 1914. John Wade was champion from 1926 to 1928. The best record, however, went to Taussaint, who emerged triumphant five times altogether, winning in 1910 and 1917 in addition to his three victories in a row.

Humberto Collaco met Carson in the Shanghai final in 1936. He put up a good fight, losing only after four hard-fought sets. Both men are at present in good shape, as shown by their easy wins in the recent Interport. Carson's assets are hi net-play and stamina, Therefore, order to wrest the crown from his adversary, Collaco will have to play at his best.
