The very satisfactory result of the Salvation Army's appeal to the public of Shanghai for funds with which to carry on its excellent work, is ample proof of the regard in which the activities of that institution are held. It asked for $40,000, and has received to date more than $12,000 above that sum. Realizing the times through which Shanghai is passing the Salvation Army authorities cut their requirements to a minimum, and it was stated that with 840.000 they could carry on for the year, As d result of the almost inexhaustible gen-ersity of Shanghai they are in a better position than they had hoped to be, and they have been made to realize that there is a very general approval of the fine work that they are doing. It is in keeping with Shanghai's response to charitable appeals during this winter, that this should be so, for there are other institutions who are able to report gratifying responses to the requests for assistance, in some cases the totals received exceeding those of previous years, and in the case of one society actually establishing a new record. This is all the more remarkable when it is remembered that Shanghai is passing through excep tionally grave times, a period when it is to be expected that the purse-strings would be tightened rather than loosened. With the outlook for the future still unsettled it is as well that this should be the case. How long existing conditions will continue it is impossible to forecast, but if they are unduly prolonged there is every prospect of much greater demands lade upon the v us charitable institu-tio than have been put forward up to the present.
