New York, Mar. 5.
Discovery of a new substance, Cxtracted from ox blood, which will stop the bleeding of sufferers from haemophilia almost immediately claimed here as a result of research by a group of four American doctors.
The doctors say that they have succeeded in isolating and purifying thrombin, the element in blood that makes it clot when exposed to air. In experiments thrombin has been sprayed on wounds through a scent spray and has resulted in a complete cessation of bleeding within ten seconds.
Besides its use in cases of haemophilia, thrombin is expected to be of great value to surgeons, particularly in delicate operations on he brain and liver. In surgical in-jons it will stop bleeding from small blood vessels that cannot be closed in any other way.—Reuter.
