New York, Sept. 20.
Stock prices on Wall Street today advanced along a broad front up to about 4 points, while confidence is returning in the market, After increased activity conditions quietened down, awaiting the Czech reply to ihe Anglo-French proposals. Occzsional mild profit taking, however, was readily absorbed, with prices finishing around the day's best levels. Steels, were again very prominent, with persistent demand resulting in still higher prices for non-ferreous metals. Motors improved in response to earnings reports, while rails were quietly supported as the outcome of Washington efforts to settle the wage controversy is eagerly awaited. Meanwhile, it is believed that the large volume of potential buying which has been built up will be brought out in the event of the European situation shaping up favourably. Wall Street circles see unmistakable signs of a revival of confidence for the restoration of European peace, or, at least, the averting of a large scale war. Despite reports of more border clashes, coupled with doubts as to whether the Czechs would accept the Anglo-French plan, traders seem to think that the trend of events is against a probable general conflict soon. However, brokers showed no inclination to press the recovery advantage, with the result that buying slackened noticeably after pivota: issues had regained part of their recent losses. The turnover today amounted to 1,200,000 shares.
