Manila. Dec. 5.
In an editorial entitled "Japan Cannot Afford 1t" the "Philippines Herald" today interpreted the American-Japanese diplomatic discussion at Tokyo yesterday as a "serious attempt in Tokyo to place Nippon-American relations on an improved basis after the commerce treaty expires."
Japan's and America's interests in the Far East should not be mutually antagonistic, the journal said.
"Annual U.S.-Japanese trade, whose volume is enormous, is, after all. the main interest 2f each nation in each other," the "Herald" commented.
"There is no possible gain that could fully replace this trade. America's Chinese trade is next only to that with Japan in volume insofar as the Orient is concerned, and naturally America would like to save it also. But in the two countries' bids for Chinese trade, they will not forget that each. is the other's best customer."
The "Herald" attributed strained relations between the two countries to jingoism in both countries.
"We believe fundamentally the two nations are friends and mean to be friends, the "Herald" said.—United Press.
