Dachshunds' Long Lineage

As a matter of fact, we can take credit for having done much, to popularize the dachshund on the Continent, paradoxical though that may "sound. They were first exhibited here iit 1872, about six years before they &ppéared on the show bench in Ger-"Many, and a German club in support the breed did not come into istence until ten years after the first place. She won successively the third leg of the Challenge Cup (by sailing round the course alone under stormy weather conditions when no other yacht ventured outside of Woosung), and several other contests, thereby establishing a good lead in points. Ella's consistency in the earlier part of the season won her a good position' and she sailed round the marks on Sunday to retain her position with second flag while Rover, with a good succession of victories in the earlier part of the year, and lesser success in the second halt of the season took third place. The following were the points scored in the championship: Viking 71%, Ella 63, Rover 55%, Ingomar 50, Mignon 37, Valkyra 25%, Spook 22, Goo Goo 10%. pre formation of our Dachshund Club. Surely we are right in ¢laiming a considerable share in the making of the breed, or rather in its popularization.

Prejudice did not blind our soldiers and airmen to the shepherd dog, ex-service men were among the first to import them after the War was over, and they are to be found in numbers among the supporters of these dogs as well as dachshunds. "A concession was made by calling the German shepherd dogs Alsatian Wolf Dogs. It was all wrong, of course, and some of us were amused at the attempts made to identify them with Alsace, some even going to the extent of suggesting that they were the descendants of Scotch collies taken into the Province by monks centuries ago.

I believe they do owe something to the collie for their existence, but in a different way. It has been said that German breeders, piqued by the success of the collie in that country, set about producing a. distinctive sheep dog of their own from crosses of several other varieties. Whatever the motive may have been that is how the Alsatian came about towards the end of last century.
