A settlement of pending Japanese-British economic questions will" be. subordinated to the success of any eventual efforts London may like to induce Generalissimo Chiang Kai-shek to change his attitude and cease resistance, informed Japanese quarters here stated today.

In the meantime, the same quarters pointed out, the solution to the pro! lem of British navigation—upon the Yangtze River.depends upon the local authorities. And the latter are asserted to be inspired only by strategic) considerations, so that a settlement is imminent, it is believed.
