Score Rises Rapidly

Spencer and Maclagan caused little trouble to the bowlers, but with the advent of Russell, the score went up by leaps and bounds, both batsmen laying on very heavily and securing boundaries aplenty. Russel should have been caught by Anstice when 4, but an easy chance was missed. With the scoreboard reading 99; Eatwell's wicket was spreadeagled by an off break from Duckett. The out-i going batsman played a fine innings and though he offered an easy chance to Simpson when 15, he scored at will and was never in difficulties, Crew was out first ball following a poor stroke and Russell did not stay much longer, being stumped when attempting a big hit. His valuable 23 included no less than five fours. Plumb fell an easy victim to Leach and with Major Eynon not batting, the Club were able to snatch a close victory in a tense finish.
