Over 500,000 Tons to Be Imported Duty Free London, Dec. 3.
British millers have just completed negotiations for the unprecedented purchase of more than 500,000 tons' of wheat from the United States.
While scme quarters regard the transaction as being on behalf of the Government's food defence plans, the millers state it is a purely private deal to take advantage of the big surplus of wheat in America.
The selling programme of the United States allows for dirüinution of the surplus by 100,000.000 bushels, or 1,500,000 tons, by next spring, and the present sale is part of this programme.
The greater part, if not the whole, of the purchase will be delivered after January 1, 1939, and, therefore, will enter duty free under the Anglo-American Trade Pact.—Reuter.
