Reds Open Shattering Assault

On Mannerheim Line — Finns Bitterly Stem First Rush; Big Guns, Bombers, Armoured Sledges, Troops Moving With Finnish Forces on Karelian Front, Feb. 1.

UPPORTED by 130 bombers, dozens of tanks and heavy smoke, screens, Russian troops launched a terrific attack on Finnish positions at Summa in the middle of the Mannerheim Line this morning in an attempt to break through. Fighting continued there tonight.

For the first time the Russians used a new device—heavily armoured sledges armed with machine-guns were pushed ahead of the tanks today. The Soviets threw wave after wave against the defences of the Mannerheim Line in the most powerful drive on the Isthmus this week.

Artillery preparations for the attack lasted six hours.
