In those territories still controlled by the National Government, 200,000 spindles and 1,000 looms are now working overtime.
In the two foreign settlements in Shanghai, it is stated, eight new mills have recently been established, with 86,000 spindles. Three of these mills are now in full operation, Meanwhile, many new mills have been established near Chungking, and also in Yunnan province. The Yunnan Cotton Mill, established last August, is increasing the number of its spindles from 10,000 to 30,000, aided by loans from the Bank of China. The bank, the journal continues, is also financing new mills in Hunan and Shensi provinces.
When the spindles removed from the war areas are operating once again, and when the new mills, either planned or under construction, are completed, there will be, in the National Government's territories. 500,000 spindles and 5,000 looms.
Together with the Chinese mills in the foreign areas in Tientsin and Shanghai, China will still have-over 1,000,000 spindles, or roughly 40 per cent. of her pre-war capacity.
Of the 10,000 industrial co-opera tives planned for next year, 3,500 will be textile ce-operatives.
It is ated that the consumptive capacity of the National Government's territories will be about 10,000,000 bolts of cloth annually, 3,000 of which will be supplied by these ce-operatives within the next 12 months.—Reuter.
