Paper Hunt Club Challenge

Cup — Won by Going Slow — Clark on Rye Second by a Neck in Exciting Finish; Newcastle Beats Night Express By T Crase"

LARGE crowd was in attendance yesterday when the Shanghai Paper Hunt Club held their Annual Race Meeting and saw Mrs, Liddell's well-known. hunter Going Slow, with "Buzz" Browne in the saddle, defeat the highly-fancied Rye to win by a neck and give his owner her first leg on the Club Challenge Cup. The race was run with all the magnificence of its tradition and the sight of riders with Pink coats was indeed very impressive. It was a good race and the field was well hi hed with the exception of Solovei whose high jumping tactics püt him right out of the race, so far out that his rider Sammy Yuan gave up in despair. Slipus led the field by several lengths in the first round with Contentment and Bobby lying next, and Rye and Don Alfonso at the rear. The position was more or less unchanged until the second round where Rye moved up and Contentment started to tired.

Just before approaching the Natural the second time round, Going Slow and Rye drew away from the field to have it out between them. Rye lost two precious lengths at the Monument, which the experts consider, cost him the race. Going Slow was first over Morris Water Jump on the run-in end just managed to hold off Rye's challenge to win by a neck, Don Alfonso wes third three lengths away.

Black Magic came down at the Morris' Water Jump the second time and brought down his rider who was unhurt, Spills were plentiful yesterday, there being one in every steeplechase, Young Duncan Fraser had his first skid on a steeplechase course when White Sale (late NeckartaD sold him at the Polo Ground Jump and came down. Alec White went for a loop at the same spot as Fraser, in the Stewards Cup, but remounted to finish fourth.
