Scores of Brooms Smashed

A large group of the strikers surrounded and intimidated—P.W.D. workmen about to start street sweep: ing, in the vicinity of Vu Ya Ching and Amoy Roads at 6,30 o'clock yesterday morning. Some 150 street sweepers were carrying bamboo brooms when the strikers swooped down on them, seized the brooms and smashed them. A hurry call was sent to Louza Police Station but the riotous coolies had dispersed when the Police arrived. No arrests were made. The trouble-makers all were said to have been highway coolies.

Throughout the morning cases of interference with work were reported at various points in the Settlement. These disturbances took place at North Soochow and Kansuh Roads (garbage cart coolies working), Wenchow and Sinza Roads (garbage coolies), in Kwangse Road, Fokien Road, Foochow Road, Race Course Road and elsewhere.

The 2,000 coolies walked out early on Monday morning. Supsequently the Municipal Council agreed to grant them.an additional daily rice allowance of 10 cents per man.
