Of fundamental importance in the further commercial development of Gdynia is its recognition as a base port by various shipping conferences for trade to non-European countries. This places Gdynia with regard to freight rates on a level with the great Western European ports such as Hamburg, Rotterdam and Antwerp and in a better position than other Baltic ports.
It also implies that the additional "range" charged by the conference lines for transport over the distance from the base port is no longer taken on freights from Gdynia to a number of foreign countries, among them those in the Far East.
With regard to harbour dues Gdynia is one of the cheapest ports of the Baltic and the North Sea. The scale of dues also allows for numerous reductions and exemptions, especially for regular lines. Equally low in comparison with other ports are the dues for use of cranes and for storage in harbour warehouses.
