Indians at Singapore Want to Serve Move Pushed For Forming A. Volunteer Unit

Singapore, July 16.

Formation of an Indian Company in the Singapore Volunteer Corps will be sought by an influential Indian deputation which will wait on the Governor, Sir Shenton Thomas.

The Indians are the only British community at Singapore which has no Volunteer unit of its own. There are separate Companies for British Europeans (including one Scottish Company) and for Malayans, Eurasians and Chinese. The Indians have always felt - aggrieved that, although they are the third largest community in point of numbers in ihe Colony (Malayans and Chinese are the main ones), they have been denied a separate unit.

Agitation for the formation of a separate Indian unit has been in progress for more than 10 years. Various reasons have been advanced by the Government for not forming a separate unit, including lack of funds and shortage of recruits.—Reuter.
