Buildings Released

Early in January 1938, as the sult of a request received from the Shanghai American School to re-Tinguish several rooms for the use. of their own students, it became necessary to withdraw a considerable number of pupils from that school. A large house in Vu Yuen Road was acquired for the Public School for Girls, while the boys of the Public & Thomas Hanbury School were transferred for afternoon sessions to the Shanghai Jewish School. Shortly afterwards negotiations were completed for the release early date of the two school build ings' that were still occupied by the British Defence Forces. Efforts were also continued to obtain additional premises for Chinese schools; three more houses were eventually' found, enabling the enrolment in the primary schools to be increased to 3.334 pupils.

Tu March the Public Schoo! for Girls, the Western District Public School. and the Secondary School for chinese Girls returned amidst veneral rejoicing to their former bodes, and the Public & Thomas Hanbury School for Boys moved to more spacious quarters in Kinnear Road. "There remained only one foreign school—the Public 'Thomas Hanbury School for Girls—for which no suitable building could be obtained until May, when this Institution in tur found' a temporary home in' Jessfiela Road. Thus by June the situation has eased siderably, reasonable provision having been made for each type of school. The enrolment figures for foreign, respectively io 75, 83 and 74 per cent. of the corresponding numbers for the preceding June.
