Cruel Slaughtering Of Ponies, Cattle

&SP.CA. Investigate Conditions at Local Abattoir Despite the efforts of the local authorities and the SS.P.C.A., who have accomplished much splendid work in the Shanghai area to stop unnecessary. displays of cruelty towards all animals, there is yet much more to be done before satisfactory conditions are established throughout the city. One of the chief evils, with which the authorities have to contend, is the method used by the majority of the Chinese slaughterhouses in the district, where terrible suffering is inflicted on the unfortunate animals before they finally succumb to their injuries.

Situated behind St. John's University, in the territory now under the control of the "Reformed" Government, is one abattoir, which is typical of many other native slaugh-teahouses throughout Shanghai. Here the majority of animals which are killed include ponies, cattle and pigs, most of them being intended for human consumption. Here, also, terrible sufferings are inflicted on the animals with the result that the SS.P.C.A. are investigating conditions there and an improvement may be expected in the future.
