Altitude Record

It is true that as long ago as 1932 a Bristol biplane established a record altitude flight of 43,976 feet and that since then the world record has been raised to 56,000 feet. But these flights were made with special aircraft which were lightly loaded. and they had a comparatively short duration. Before a bomber could be built to fly at any height approaching these figures many problems would have to be solved.

On the other hand, the difficulties of evolving an anti-aircraft gun capable of firing projectiles to extreme altitudes are not insuperable. In the last war the Germans bombarded Paris with their notorious "Big Bertha" from Laou over a distance of 82 miles. This weapon was constructed from a 15in. gun combined with an 82 gun, and it fired a shel! weighing 250ib. which rose at its highest point 25 miles.
