New York, May 13.
American importers of Chinese rugs received another blow to their trouble-ridden trade when Germany invaded Norway and Denmark, because most of these cargoes are carried in Danish and Norwegian vessels. One estimate said about 50 per cent. of the rugs are carried in these bottoms. One large shipment is tied up at present at Cristobal, in the Canal Zone, in a Danish vessel, which is waiting there to see what final disposition is to be made of Danish flag vessels in the curious situation which has developed as a result of German occupation of that country.
Several other shipments consigned to big New York companies are at present en route in Norwegian vessels. Since these vessels have been ordered into Allied or neutral ports, considerable dislocation of the rug trade is feared for some time.
