Apt Description

Mr. Anthony Eden, Dominions Secretary, hit the nail fairly and squarely on the head, when, in the course of a speech in Warwick on Saturday, he declared that "This is not a war; it is a crusade for international decene; It is that and nothing else, for if the "vents of the past three months have shown anything at all, it is that the Allies are fighting the evil thing which Herr Hitler has sought to introduce into international relations, and in which M. Stalin, for purposes entirely his own, is supporting him. The Allies in accepting the challenge which Herr Hitler threw down have not embarked upon a campaign to secure new rights, territories or privileges, but are seeking for themselves, and the other peoples of the world the right to live their lives in freedom, and peace, to develop their industry, and commerce, and to raise the standard of living. Indeed during the interval since the last war much had already been done in that respect, and considerable progress made, but the advent of war has thrown all that into abeyance to await better times when peace, and international security shall again be restored to the world. Mr. Eden made a good point when he said that the British Empire is the very antithesis of Nazi Germany in all that it stands for, and its conception of life. The state of Europe under the domination of Hitlerian methods is difficult to imagine, but it is realized from all that has transpired that a German victory over the Allies would be the vindication of methods against which every man with any traditional sense of freedom could not but rebel. It is just as well that he pointed out that one of the chief desires of the democracies which are at war is not only to emerge victorious from this present struggle, but from thi ordeal of sacrifice to come fitted to construct better world. To do that it will be necessary to avoid repetition of the mistakes which have greatly contributed to the present lamentable state of affairs, and it will be imperative te make sure for all time that, while Germany shall receive all that is her proper due, e shall never again be allowed to gain such a position from which she will be able to create such trouble as she has at present brought upon Europe. It is believed that, apart from those chauvinists who have rem ed in power all too long, the masses of the German people are just as desirous of peace as those nations which are at present fighting them. They can onl: achieve that when the present leaders of Ger many have been driven from power, and an opportunity given to German moderates to rebuild their country along lines, which will make it possible for the rest of Europe to live in amity with them. The hideous system which Herr Hitler and his accomplices has created must be destroyed, and the common decencies of international life restored. It is for that that the Allies are fighting, end to call it a crusade is to describe it by the only term possible.
