"Dora was wearing her W. V. S-uniform and I Red Cross so we were accepted as part of the organizations that work for the welfare of these people, and were met everywhere with complete lack of embarrassment and complete friendliness, In Red Cross uniform you are addressed as "nurse" (though I am not a nurse) which entitles you to all confidence. It was all very clean and not smelly. There is a first Aid Post and provision made for food. but the sanitation I gather is not yet adequate because it is mainly above ground and in a bad raid the people do not like to emerge.
"We then got a taxi and drove to Bermondsey to the ARP. organizers office. In London there are dim street lights and a certain amount of light on the vehicles. There was moonlight also, so we could just see to get about, but I cannot imagine anything more awful than doing ARP. work in this darkness with buildings falling all around. We were sent to Mr, Travers who is the ARP. organizer for Bermondsey, and in his office there was also the Borough Surveyor. They were kindness itself and told us of all the work they were doing. A very cheery. breezy soul called Joe blew in and out— typical Cockney. and Mr. Travers told us he has recommended him for the George medal for his great bravery.
