Gesture of Protest

It is reliably learned here that, prior to the departure of the Graf Spee from Montevideo, Captain Langsdorf sent a letter to the German Minister protesting bitterly against the Uruguayan Government's refusal to allow more time for repairs.

The Commander is reported to have declared that, in view of the Government's attitude and his responsibility for the lives of a thousand men, his only course was to seve the crew, and blow up the vessel in the vicinity of Montevideo as a protest.—Retuer.
