Research Secrecy

A producer-gas unit for motor vehicles, the result of Government. sponsored research, is expected "shortly" to go into production. The body engaged on this piece of research is the British Coal Utilization Research Association, which supported jointly by the coal owners and by the Government through the Department of Scientific and Industrial Research. "Its researches have for the most part fructified, and a "model" producer unit is understood to have resulted. All that remains to be done is for the research body, and the Government, to satisfy themselves about the fuel, states the "Financial News."

It is understood that the patents of the unit will be vested in a holding company associated closely with the British CU.RA., and that this holding company will grant manufacturing licences to those qualified manufac turers who wish to take the thing up.

The secrecy with which these developments have been, and still are, surrounded, is very difficult to understand, particularly as the business world has been increasingly critical of the Government's apparent inaction. Weeks pass. Nothing is, apparently, done, and no clear statement of policy is made. Answers to questions in Parliament have tended only to increase the obscurity.
