London's Fears

Lonaon, May 28.

Diplomatic circles here last night were taking àn increasingly serious view of the possibility that Italy might soon enter the European War on the side of Germany. Fears also were increasing that Italy would attempt to drag Spain into the war against the Allies if Signor Benito Mussolini joins forces with Adolf Hitler.

The despatch of Sir Samuel Hoare to Madrid as an Ambassador on a Special Mission yesterday was believed to have been designed by London to check any trend in Spain ioward entrance into the war, Britain's anxiety over Italy's next move was also evident in the Mediterranean where all British women and children have been evacuated from Gibraltar.

Britain in the past week has attempted to eliminate some of Italy's grievances against the Allies but diplomatic quarters admitted last night that relations between Rome and the Allies had not improved. Instead, war fever is reported to be spreading through Italy and uniformed troops are cheered wildly as they march through the streets of the major cities, apparently en route to reinforce Italy's frontiers.
