The "gravity of the present hour" was stressed by Pope Pius XII today in a statement to the Sacred College made on the occasion of Saint day, his patronymic saint's ing a tragic picture of the hor-tors and sufferings the present war is causing to Europe, His Holiness recalled the vain attempts he had made te maintain peace.
The Pope then appealed to all countries at war td respect laws of humanity and international rules of warfare, referring particularly to the treatment of non-combatants in Occupied countries.
He closed his statement by appealing to all men to realize the necesity of a real peace which would be j honourable and lasting"—
