Definite Guarantees Reported Given to Turkey By Soviet

Assurances Rumoured Despatched During Sir Stafford Cripps Recent Trip to Ankara

Ankara, Mar. 21.

I frequent Turkish was learned on good authority today that as a result of the Soviet consultations of late, Moscow gave definite "assurances" to Ankarą with regard to the Soviet attitude towards Turkey.

For the first time, it was added, these assurances were given by the Kremlin when Sir Stafford Cripps, the British. Ambassador to Moscow, made a hurried trip here while Mr. Anthony Eden, the British Foreign Secretary and General Sir John Dill, were on a visit to Turkey. Since that time, Turkish Soviet consultations, which still had been going on, had resulted in a clarification of Moscow's attitude, it was said.

"Meanwhile, Foreign Minister Sukru Sarajoglu, immediately upon his return from Cyprus, where he saw the British Foreign Secretary, had a long conference with President Ismet Tnonu, to whom he gave a detailed report of his talks. Later in the afternoon, a Council of Ministers, under Premier Refik Saydam, examined Sarajoglu's report.

"Well informed quarters assert that the main points discussed in Cyprus were relevant to the questions of Salonica and the Dardannelles and "some others" which they refused to specify.—Havas Telemondial.
