Shanghai Scottish" Jubilee Dinner

N.C.D.N. Photographs

The history of the Shanghai Scottish Company of the Shanghai Volunteer Corps, which celebrated its silver jubilee on January 20, shows a splendid record of unstinted and faithful service in the defence of Shanghai.

The Company was formed ju October, 1914, with a membership of 50, as a result of the efforts of Mr. C. M.

Bain. Captain C. H, Rutherford, an old member of the famous London Scottish, was the first O. C. of the Company, with Lieutenant Gavin L. Campbell and 2nd Lieutenant J. S. Chisolm as senior and junior subalterns. The first duty that the Scottish performed was the guarding of H. M, Consulate during the war. In their 25 years of service the Scottish have been mobilized many times in defence of the Settlement and during the Sino-Japanese war in Shanghai in 1937 were under such heavy shell fire that they had to be withdrawn from their post in "B" Sector after three days on duty. In 1932 also they had a very hard time in their garrison of "Windy Corner."
