When extreme heat is radiated fire can pass through concealed ceiling spaces into adjoining sections, and defy the efforts of the firemen as it would be difficult for fire jets to reach the fire. In a case of this sort it is possible for the fire to travel over the firemans' heads without their immediate knowledge. All concealed channels and air ducts or flues through which fire could travel should be adequately fitted with fire stops to eliminate and retard the progress of the fire, In all large passenger vessels adequate fire stops should be constructed and steel bulkheads provided. Openings in these bulkheads should be eliminated as far as pos sible to eliminate the travel of undetected fire, all fittings, draperies and furnishings should be fire resistant as far as possible. The essential question of providing adequate fire protection of large ocean liners needs to be studied very carefully, as there is a vast difference between the fire risks of ship construction and building construction on land.
