It must be realized that air attack against shipping will be limited to comparatively narrow waters. Craft in mid-ocean will have little to fear beyond a sporadic raid by one machine catapulted from a hostile warship. The English Channel, the Thames Estuary, the Straits of Gibraltar, the area round Malta are typical narrow seas in which anti-air defence measures will be vital. And it is for work in such areas that the Admiralty is producing flotillas of "floating batteries" by converting our older cruisers and destroyers into anti-aircraft ships The first converted cruisers carry ten 4in. A-A. guns and multiple pom-poms, but it is expected that as larger types come to be taken in hand an even heavier battery will for the suppression of other peoples."
