Success Doubted

Parliamentary circles are most sceptical as to the initiative's chances of success owing to the persistently poor relations between the Reich and the Vatican due to Germany's desire to take over all Church properties on her territory. Furthermroc, Herr Hitler was the only head of state who did not reply to the Pope's letter announcing his election as Supreme Pontiff.

Another reason is that Poland up till now has always refused to submit the Danzig and Polish Corridor questies to an international conference ble, pointing to the disappearance of Czechoslovakia as a justification for the refusal. Finally, France has always refused the interference of a third Power in her dispute with Italy, while the Vatican initiative was probably approved beforehand by Signor Mussolini who possibly concluded the alliance with Germany in order to strengthen Italy's position at an eventual conference.—Havas.
