"There was little activity on the labour front in the International Settlement and French Concession yesterday. although predictions of another dispute between the French Municipality and garbage coolies were current. It was also reported yesterday that assistant of local grocery shops, in the foreign areas, had approached their employers for increases in wages and living allowances.
The biggest dispute was still the one at the Commercial Press where a deadlock prevails. although attempts have been made to bring about o settlement, The strike hes involved l the branches of the concern, putting about 1000 persons out of jobs temporarily, although some sources believe that, when a settlement is reached, there will be fewer employees at the Commercial Press. The reason for this is the fact that the company has been losing money steadily since the outbreak of the Sino-Japanese hostilities. and it is the idea of the management of the firm that it could continue with a smaller staff. it was reported that an incident broke out at the French P.W.D. depot in Rue Brenier de Montmorand on Saturday, when the garbage coolies came in to get their wages only to find them reduced, since, it was said, the French Municipality had announced that they would not pay the coolies for the striking days. A party of police was called out when the incident assumed threatening proportions and several men were arrested, it was reported. They were released Iter in the day.
