Himself on Whisky

Half a Bottle Before Race — Brings Victory

London, Feb. 3.

It's the spirit that counts, in horse racing as in most other things. Maikai, an extremely nervous gelding, always has a nip of whisky in "his case, three-quarters of a bottle—on the morning of a race to steady himself.

Despite this treatment, Maikai proved to be the unluckiest horse of the year by running second in both the Caulfield and Melbourne Cups, two of Australia's premier turf" events. Then the owners friend, a whisky merchant, had a bright idea. Perhaps the horse didn't care the particular brand of whisky he had been taking.

The brand was changed—and so was Maikai He won his next two races, including the Eclipse Stakes, in which he had been fifteen lengths behind the leaders with half-a mile to go.
