Along the Highways

May 18—One of our most attractive flower-g trees is the "Pride of India," (Melia sedarach). This tree may be seen in many places in the country around Shanghai and is now producing its delicate lilac flowers in profusion, The melia is a perfect shade tree and a single specimen planted on the lawn adds much to the usefulness of the place: it is a quick grower when it has become established although it sometimes resents being transplanted. We find that if the tree is moved when small, it soon recovers and grows rapidly to a fairly large size with an abundance of light green foliage on hes spreading out like an umbrella, Wher are transplanted, they are liable at any rate, develop. unsatisfactorily alns at-ye even after the foliage has fallen yellowish seeds as ge as beads and not unlike th on the leafles branches all the winter, Durin the early part of is year, we ko few trees under observations we could not quite understand why the seeds were not eaten by birds when they are supposed to it favourite "dishes." We had seen farmers placing the seeds in bamboo bird but we had not seen any birds actually Perhaps we were alw e on the scene despite promises of cooperation from a of the people. However, there is no doubt, e the seed especially if other food i ug of the difficulty of move large Melias reminds us of the Camphor Cinnamomum Camphora) which is another that rose ug moved when fairly large we cannot under star why some people ussist on purchasing large specimens. We many owners of new gardens like to sce large trees on their property as soon as possible, but we feel that smaller Camphors ore likely to develop into large specimens earlier than older trees: of course we are lucky sometimes, but is it worth the risk? May is supposed to be the month for transplanting Cam-but we have seen many carefully moved and replanted facing the same direction as they were previously and they have seldom thrived. The Camphor is a quick grower, despite reports to the contrary, and one good young one is often more so than a few older specimens. However, it is not al a good policy to throw away a tree that has died back after transplanting: we have seen trees send forth strong growths from the base attained a height of over r. This growth is, naturally, soft, and it ma ain during the following Winter if it does not always do so Stand in Line There!
