Fletcher and Underwood did not stay long though, the latter being sent back to the pavilion before the century mark was reached. Ninety-seven were still needed for victory when Lingard, the last man, came in, and the most interesting cricket of the day was seen. The pair of them set about the bowling with a will and at one time it seemed possible that they would knock off the necessary runs. Both of them delighted in huge hitting and the crowd thoroughly enjoyed the fireworks. In attempting another big hit, however, Lawrence was clean bowled by Sluis after recording a well deserved 72, which included no less than eight boundary hits. Lingard remained undefeated with 25 to his credit, the score reading 149 when Lawrence was retired, the match thus being lost by 46 runs, Sluis, Cornfield and Kale shared the bowling honours, the former getting three and the two others, two wickets apiece.
