Regional Fighting

"A summary of regional fighting during the seven-day period under review is as follows:

"1, North China—Launching operations intended to crush bases of Chinese troops under Gen. Fu Tso-i and Gen. Ma Chan-shan, the Mohammedan troops, and the northwestern Kuomintang troops, 11 Japanese detachments which had been active on the Mongolian plains despite the icy cold started fast drives against Wuyuan in western Suiyuan at dawn on February 1.

"Six other Japanese detachments, which had been advancing along the Yellow River to the northwest, reached Wanhochang, 30 kilometres north of Wuyuan, at 9.30 o'clock in the morning of February 1, and at 3 o'clock in the afternoon arrived at Wuchou. In that áfternoon they captured Lanshan, Chingshenghsiang and Tucheng in rapid succession. Apprehensive, Gen. Fu Tso-i took steps to aid the Mohammedan troops under Gen. Ma Hung-ta and Gen. Ma Hung-pin, digging tank traps and strengthen positions for the defense of Wuyuan.

"All this was of no avail to halt the swift onslaughts of the Japanese, whose vanguards raised the Rising Sun on the southeastern corner of the walled city of Wuyuan at 9 o'clock in the morning of February 3.

"Without taking any rest, the Japanese detachments rushed along the Wuyuan-Liuho Highway in close pursuit of the retreating Chinese troops, and at dusk on February 4 crossed the Liuho River, extending their gains. One of these detachments entered Shanpa at noon on February 6, and thus all the strategic bases in the northwestern areas fell into Japanese hands.

"Following their panicky retreat in front of the rapid Japanese operations, the Chinese troops are now trying fo find ways of escape in areas along the lines connecting Lanshan and Wukiaho and in Ninghsia Province, southwest of Liuho. But the Japanese forces are continuing their annihilating drives against them with-cut respite.
