The Refugee Plea to British Firms

ro the Editor of the "Nortu-Cutna Dalny News"

War is raging between Democracy and Dictatorship. Both are fighting for their principles. Freedom and equality against slavery and oppression. There is no doubt where my sympathies are. England. momentarily the sole nation resisting Germany, must and shall gain the final victory for maintaining freedom, justice and equality. But here in the East the economical fight is not less hard. I am sorry to state that here in the East the British do not keep to their democratic principles. For sixteen months here in Shanghai I try hard to get a job and therefore follow up attentively the advertisements for vacant positions. It strikes me to read so often: "British firm has vacancy. only British subjects need fo apply." (I do not refer to government positions.) Being a refugee, and owing to unfortunate circumstances nearly destitute of all my means, of good appearance. with all round knowledge, I am unable to find a position in any capacity. Last year I fought even as professional boxer for the benefit of the British War Fund. That it was not a financial success is not my fault Anyho many of my fellow-men and I gave and give their share to support the sake of the British. Would it not be right if the great British firms would give up their reserve and would give us refugees also a chance? Most of us having endured hardship beyond endurance are here faced with the impossibil-My of getting a job. Well, if this letter will catch the attention of some employers. the purpose of my writing is attained.
