Red Agents Still Active

That the Reds are interested collecting FRB. notes—for thi of course, fs the only currency thes villages possess—Is not without a ce {ain piquancy. Tt would certainly appear to indicate that. in spite of tthe Japanese so-called economic blockade, with its security campaigns, its censuses, permits and all the rest, the Communists must still have their agents in, or at leas, their connec tions with, the larger towns of the occupied zone, where they can buy the supplies that they are in need Of, FRB, notes can be of no use to them in the unoccupied territory.

Some figures of a census taken in Aprit by both the Japanese and Chinese authorities and recently published show the ernomous Japanese Immigration (hat hasbeen taking place into north China. According {to these figures, there were in April ast nearly. 380,600 Japanese nationals north China—presumably roughly north and cast of the Yellow River, OF that number, 275,000 were actual Japanese, 70,000 were Koreans and the rest "Formosans. Peiping topped the ist 17,000, The statement adds the following significant note—"This figure indicates that the Me crease of the Japanese population in this elly averaged 129 persons per singe January 1 this vest, despite the various regulations drawn up by the Japanese Government last year prohibiting further Japanese im+ migrants entering North China."

According to the same census, the Population of Peiping in Apri' was 131,043, of whom 1,680,362, exactly, were Chinese. Adding the Japanese Agures and allowing say. 1.000. for other foreigners, there are still near-100.000 unaccounted for, so that {the arithmetic of the census' does not seem to. be very accurate. The statistics further tells that here there are 26,722 shops, big and small. As the Chinese population is about 4,700,000, this means one shop every G4 of the Chinese population, The Japanese shops totalled 1.500, or Jone to every 85 Japanese.
